Canada’s own Alex Baird resides in the beautiful city of Toronto (shameless plug I was born there.) While hunting up information on this dynamo, I found she doesn’t like to write bios on herself. While going through her self-portrait I found that she possess a witty sense of humor. Alex says it didn’t take God whispering in her ear to write music, or living in her van to make ends meet, oh and count out a brain aneurysm while touring Europe. But she admits sharing a rehearsal space with Slik Toxic, and to unceremoniously knocking herself unconscious after a “failed crowd dive” at a New Year’s Eve gig.
Describing her musical style as “Melodic groove pop for the 21st century.” Alex’s sound gets its influence from artists such as Jam, REM, Pretenders, Everything But The Girl, Sundays and Beth Orton to name a few. Include the group members consisting of, Andrew Aldridge - guitar, Steve Mills - bass, Greg Thomas - keys, Martin Menard - drums, Kim Kelly - back-up vox, and you have the perfect mixture for some really noteworthy tunes. Alex’s whimsical humor is displayed throughout the track “Insomnia” which discusses the phenomena of falling in love over the Internet. Other songs like “Hide Away” have a darker edge to them. The listener can find many different meanings depending on where you are on life’s path.
Alex was a 1999 Lilith Fair finalist, is featured on Women of MP3.com, and has made appearances on Toronto’s Breakfast Television, City-TV news, and local cable channel Roger’s. This year she released Ish on Hunt the Sandman Records, produced by Iain McNally (Vibrolux, Catherine Durand, Sarah Slean)
The songs feature Alex’s wonderfully lazy, melodic voice. She has a slow easy delivery that’s flows smoothly throughout her songs. The bands tight playing completes the package nicely. Sorry Alex for the “cringe-inducing purple prose.”
